RANK Excel Formula and Similar Functions

The RANK Function

The RANK function in Excel is used to determine the ranking of a value in a list of data. It assigns a rank to each value based on its position in the list.

Syntax: =RANK(number, ref, [order])

Step 1: Open Microsoft Excel and create a new worksheet or use an existing one.

Step 2: Enter your dataset in a column (for example, in column A) with the values you want to rank.

Step 3: In another column (for example, in column B), enter the formula =RANK(A1, $A$1:$A$10, 0).

Step 4: Press Enter to see the result. The formula will rank the value in A1 against the data range A1:A10 in descending order (0) or ascending order (1).

Example:

Suppose you have the following dataset in column A:

After using the RANK function, column B will display:

254

The RANK.EQ and RANK.AVG Functions

Excel also offers two other ranking functions: RANK.EQ and RANK.AVG. These functions are similar to RANK but handle duplicate values differently.

RANK.EQ: This function assigns the same rank to duplicate values and leaves gaps in the ranking sequence.

Syntax: =RANK.EQ(number, ref, [order])

Example:

Using the same dataset as above, column C will display:

AC
153
202
105
301
254

RANK.AVG: This function assigns an average rank to duplicate values without leaving gaps in the ranking sequence.

Syntax: =RANK.AVG(number, ref, [order])

Example:

Using the same dataset, column D will display:

AD
153
202
105
301
254
